This one seems pretty easy to diagnosis -- if your house is cool, smells good and noone has unexplained allergies, you are in the clear.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it. Add freon when the unit stops cooling well. Get your airducts cleaned if you see a heavy build up or if allergies seem to be getting dicey.

Generally central air units just need to be kept clean and free of debris like leaves. The air filter is usually the same one for your furnace, and that should be changed about every other month depending on the quality of the air that's entering system.

I have had my central air about 3 years and have never done anything to it. What should be done and how often?

i do it every year now. at one point i let it go for longer, and we ran out of freon during a hot spell in august. i decided the once a year service fee was much better than needing service unexpectedly.
