Refrigerator Types

Side-by-side Refrigerators

Side-by-side refrigerators are specialty models that provide easy access a full-length freezer and refrigerator. Side-by-side models will suit people who need a lot of freezer space. Their configuration and convenience features like through-the-door water/ice dispensers make them the most popular models, but they are also the least energy efficient and have the least usable space. Width is usually around 32 to 36 inches, with capacity listed up to 30 cubic feet.

Top-freezer Refrigerators

These can be considered the 'classic' refrigerator design. Top-freezer refrigerators tend to be the most cost affordable, offer the best storage-to-size ratio, and feature wide shelving for easy access. Some consumers find the lower position of some refrigerator items to be inconvenient. Their widths are usually about 30 to 33 inches, and they usually have from 14 to 22 cubic feet of listed capacity. Consider that for all models, 'capacity' can differ from actual usable space.

Bottom-freezer Refrigerators

Bottom-freezers are growing in popularity. Though you have to bend to reach the freezer, the refrigerator portion of the unit is the section you'll probably use most of the time, and these models keep those food items at eye-level. Ice and water dispensers are hander to find on bottom-freezer models. Widths are usually about 30 to 36 inches, and the listed capacity is normally from 19 to 26 cubic feet. Built-in Refrigerators

Built-in refrigerators are specialty models designed to integrate with a homeowner's cabinetry, and for this reason they tend to unfinished on the sides, as only the front is visible. Bottom-freezer and side-by-side models are available. Built-ins tend to make up for their lack of depth with their width, but are still not very space efficient. They look sleek, and offer lots of cosmetic options, but they are among the most expensive due their custom nature.

Cabinet-depth refrigerators

If you're looking for the style of a built-in refrigerator, but don't want to spend as much, consider a cabinet-depth model. Side-by-sides, top- and bottom-freezers, and French-door models can be found, but side-by-sides will be the most common. You'll gain a little usable space over built-ins, but still have considerably less than a freestanding model, and you'll pay a lot more.

Refrigerator Feature Options

Efficiency

Look for EnergyGuide and Energy Star labels as basic guide. Despite advancements in design, refrigerators will always use a fair amount of energy simply because of the fact that they are on all the time. On average, close to 20% of your power bill is the cost of running your refrigerator.

Capacity

Remember to take hard look at space inside the refrigerator, and not just rely on the manufacturer's stated capacity - capacity and actual usable space can be quite different. But as a baseline guide, you'll need approximately 4 to 6 cubic feet of storage per adult in your residence.

Customizable bins and shelves

You can move these to create room to fit tall items. Many come with easy-clean surfaces and ridges to prevent spills from spreading throughout the refrigerator. Elevator shelves can be raised and lowered without having to move any items. Full-extension drawers and pull-out shelves offer greater access to storage. Split shelves are able to be set at individual heights. Some units offer sliding brackets to secure bottles and jars, and even wine racks. Drawers that have independent temperature controls allow you to more effectively store specific food items.

Refrigerator colors

Color, of course, will have no bearing on performance, but finding a refrigerator that fits the style of your kitchen is an important characteristic for most people, and manufacturers continue to expand their palettes. Some common fridge colors include: stainless steel, black, white, red, and bisque.

Multimedia refrigerators

Some manufacturers are have gone so far as to offer refrigerator models that feature small LCD televisions and hookups for music devices. Save yourself thousands and purchase an MP3 player.

Through-the-door water and ice dispenser

Consumers love this feature. Just be aware that units that have ice and water dispensers are by far more frequently in need of repair.

Refrigerator water filters

Water filters reduce lead, chlorine, and other pollutants.
